Courses will be delivered both online and onsite in the Okanagan region. The
2008 summer institutes will be held in Vernon, BC.

the program
This is an in-service program designed to help teachers extend and deepen their knowledge of theory and pedagogy related to teaching home economics in schools.
The program serves those who wish to strengthen the current subject area they teach or wish to add a second subject specialization. The program will:
- Closely examine the new Home Economics IRP's and explore creative ways to address the learning outcomes.
- Update participants in new developments in textiles, food studies and nutrition.
- Include an emphasis on health and preparing students to live in a global society
- Inspire and develop leadership in home economics curriculum and instruction.
This program will be offered through off-campus and online course delivery to accommodate teachers not on-campus. Onsite courses will be held in the Okanagan region.

TEACHER QUALIFICATION SERVICE (TQS)
All Diploma specializations satisfy the program requirements of the Teacher Qualification Service for advancement from Category 4 to Category 5.
For teachers who hold a Category 5 designation, the diploma will satisfy the requirements for advancement to Category 5+.
For teachers who hold an approved Master's degree and have been assigned Category 5, the Diploma will satisfy the requirements for advancement to Category 6.

Linda Peterat, PhD
Linda Peterat is recently retired professor from the Faculty of Education, UBC and coordinator of the Home Economics Teacher Education program. She currently resides in Vernon where she serves on the boards of the Okanagan Science Centre and the Food Action Society. Her current research is on learning in informal settings and food history. Linda is an advisor to the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project at UBC Farm, an environmental education project with seniors and elementary children, and is currently working on research and several books related to this project.

Gale Smith, PhD
Gale Smith is a retired home economics teacher currently working in the Home Economics Teacher Education Program at UBC. She has been involved with the UBC program since the late 1980’s combining university teaching with teaching in public schools. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction in Home Economics Education and also has a keen interest in Global Education, Health Education and supporting local agriculture. Her research interests include using action research as a framework for professional development and exploring the historical and philosophical roots of home economics. She has taught graduate courses in home economics, action research and research methods and undergraduate courses in home economics, health, global education, food studies and agriculture in the classroom. |

This course will evaluate and compare current clothing construction techniques used in both the classroom and the ready-to-wear industry. Hands-on involvement will allow participants to produce a sample book of clothing construction techniques for use in the classroom. There will also be an update of new technology and equipment. |

Admission to the UBC Diploma in Education is open to all applicants who hold an acceptable Bachelor of Education degree from a recognized university.
A commitment to the program is required and it is recommended that the courses be taken in the order they are offered.
Application Process
Previous UBC students who have already received a degree may submit an Application for Re-admission form to activate their eligibility to register in individual courses.
Students new to UBC must complete an Application for Admission form and provide official transcripts of all previous post-secondary studies.

Tuition
UBC tuition for Education courses is $161.20/credit ($483.60 for a 3-credit course).
