Secondary Education Diploma Program
 A Cohort Program for Adult Educators

The program

This program will address issues such as:

  • Language diversity
  • Learning disabilities
  • Adolescent concerns
  • Cultural diversity
  • Multiple intelligences
  • Learning styles
  • Curriculum design & implementation

Borrowing from problem-based learning, courses will be provided through a system of select lectures and seminars that lead to an emphasis upon case study learning that integrates knowledge and experience across the program.

July 2008 Language Across the Curriculum in Multilingual Classrooms (3 credits)
September 2008 Teaching Field (4 credits)
September 2008 Teaching Field (4 credits)
February 2009 Practicum (15 credits)
9 weeks in a secondary classroom / 3 weeks in own work setting
May 2009 School Organization in its Social Context (2 credits)
July 2009 Program Synthesis E-Portfolio (3 credits)

 

applicant requirements

    • An adult education contract with a school district.
    • A completed four-year undergraduate degree with at least a 65% average on all senior-level credits.
    • Prior academic coursework will be assessed in consultation with the BC College of Teachers for appropriate teaching fields.
    • Three letters of recommendations from educators and administrators that speak to your engagement with education.
    • A resumé including summary of subjects you have taught in a secondary setting.
    • A 600-word personal statement indicating how you think this program (along with your current education and experience) can help enhance your understanding of teaching practices.
    • Official Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Official transcripts must be sent directly to Jo-Anne Chilton from each post-secondary institution you have attended - we only accept transcripts that are sealed and received via mail directly from the institution.
    • At least 5 years teaching experience in Adult Education Centres.

Completed and signed Diploma Application Form, indicating the SEDP program.
Reference letters - Three letters of reference in envelopes with the referee's signature written across the sealed envelope flap can be included in your application package.

Personal Statement

Official Transcripts - The official (sealed) transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (except from UBC) should be sent directly from the institutions to Jo-Anne Chilton, as per the address listed above. It is your responsibility to make these arrangements.

UBC Student Number - If you have been a UBC student in the past please print your UBC student number on your admission application form, UBC will print your UBC transcript.
Send everything - EVERYTHING - to EPLT (as per the address posted above). The most common delay in admissions is caused by the search for documents that  end up at other locations on this huge campus.

 

Tuition

The program total is $10,800 plus applicable student fees.

Tuition fees are in Canadian dollars, are reviewed annually by the UBC Board of Governors, and are subject to change.
