Distance Education

"Taking distance education courses has taught me to learn and grow and think on my own. The commitment of the teachers has been amazing, the support staff were incredible and the courses were interactive and challenging. I would recommend distance education courses to anyone."

External Programs and Learning Technologies (EPLT) has a long tradition of offering and supporting distance education courses. Over the past two decades, the flexibility of our course delivery has enabled thousands of UBC students to complete their programs and receive degrees.

In the last several years, teaching and learning practice has been greatly influenced by the development of educational technologies. Increased student-student and student-teacher interaction, up-to-date content, access to the most current references are just a few benefits of online learning.

Independent study courses are combinations of print materials, videos, audiotapes, readings, web-based materials, as well as e-mail interaction with the instructor and other students. All courses have assignments that are submitted to the instructor for grading, and most have exams that are written locally or at UBC.

Explore our site to see what's current, or contact us to suggest new programs or joint initiatives.

Information on Accessible Courses

Level A conformance icon,
W3C-WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

EPLT is dedicated to providing every student with full and equal access to University programs and services. Over the past year, we have worked to extend the accessible features of our online courses. The most current teaching and learning strategies have been implemented to reduce barriers caused by disability.

The first five modified courses, offered in Spring/Summer 2006, demonstrate quality teaching and learning sustainability. These updated courses provide alternative content presentation (text and audio), zoom-in options for graphics and images, transcripts for video clips, and adaptations that facilitate screen reader functions. In addition to overcoming specific barriers, these changes enrich the learning process for all students.

For more about the "Web Content Accessibility" project, please visit our Accessibility page and review the recorded presentation from BC Campus Online Conference held in February 2006.
