Online learning or e-Learning means learning from resources that are provided electronically, usually over the web. Online learning is a different experience from the face-to-face environment. Most online learning consists of a combination of web pages – course content, communication tools (email, discussion forums and chat), quizzes and tests, additional reading materials, and assignments. Learning can take place anywhere as long as the learner has access to a computer with Internet access, and can be done at the learner’s own pace and time. An online course is designed and developed by teams consisting of: a subject matter expert, an instructional designer, a web developer, a graphic designer, and others.
At UBC we use WebCT (Web Course Tools) course management system as our virtual learning space. WebCT is a tool that facilitates the creation of sophisticated World Wide Web-based educational environments. It can be used to create entire on-line courses, or to simply supplement the existing courses offered in different modes. WebCT includes bulletin boards and chat rooms, online quizzes and surveys, a grade book, a calendar and other tools that are difficult to implement on a regular (free-form) web site.
All WebCT course sites are automatically password protected. To log in, instructors and students have individual accounts. Access to all WebCT courses is available through UBC eLearning portal, where there is a vast variety of information and resources. Read more about how to access your course under "Getting started".
