Before you start working on your course, please check if you meet the basic technical requirements. UBC courses run in WebCT CE (Campus Edition) 4.1. Few courses are running in WebCT Vista, as a part of a pilot project.

Students are responsible for purchasing, installing and maintaining all computer hardware and software required for their participation in online courses.

Hardware

A PC or Mac that includes a sound card, speakers, at least a 24x CD-ROM drive and a colour monitor, 15" or larger. This usually requires at least a Pentium PC or a Power PC MacIntosh. Minimum computer memory required is 32 MB RAM but more is preferable. Participants need access to the Internet with a minimum speed of at least 33.6 kbps. Higher speed Internet access (e.g. cable or ADSL) is nice to have if it is available in your area . Contact your telephone company about high-speed connections or your cable TV provider for cable access.

Software

Web browser (at least):

• Internet Explorer 5.0
• Netscape Navigator 6.2

Some versions will cause problems so please check this carefully. If you are using a different browser, check WebCT Browser tune-up page (link to tune up page) to see whether it is supported. Preparing your browser settings will include: enabling java, enabling javascript, taking care of cache, enabling cookies, and enabling pop-up windows for:

• install plug-ins ( Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, QuickTime, Shockwave, Flash, Adobe Reader, or Java - Sun Microsystems) Some WebCT courses use browser plug-ins. To view portions of these sites, you may need one or more of the plug-ins.
