Social Emotional Learning/Social Responsibility
Practicum: Theory into Practice Course
September 2008 -

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
UBC Faculty of Education’s Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology & Special Education is offering a responsive and engaging 6-credit course on Social Emotional Learning and Social Responsibility, in a convenient format designed for working educators from districts across the lower mainland, including:
teachers, school counselors, school psychologists,
youth and family workers, administrators, etc.
Program highlights include:
- Readings and discussions on the latest theory and research in social-emotional learning (SEL) and social responsibility, including evidence-based practice and assessment.
- Training in a range of school-based social and emotional learning programs designed for elementary and secondary students, conducted by program developers and/or experts in the field. Programs include the following: Cooperative Activities and Games, Emotional Literacy, Social Problem Solving, Mindfulness Education, Moral Dilemma Discussions, School-based Anti-bullying Initiatives, Restorative Practices, etc.
- Opportunities to implement programs and reflect on putting theory and research into practice in classrooms and schools.
- All classes will be held in the Coquitlam School District, with one pre-arranged visit to the UBC Ropes Course.
The program consists of two 3-credit courses held in the Coquitlam School District, with one pre-arranged visit to the UBC Ropes Course. Part 1 held September - December 2008 and Part 2 held January - April 2009.

Permission of the instructor is required for all three courses - contact Dr. Shelley Hymel. Once approval is received EPLT will register students in the appropriate courses (registration is blocked).
UBC graduate students also require permission from their program advisors to register in EPSE 561H/I.
NOTE: The Western Deans' Agreement does not apply to the these courses.
